byung-chul han: “ai cannot think because it does not have a hand.” -> you don’t really understand anything unless you actually engage with the material in very low tech ways

my identity has been fluid, molded by the places I have been to. growing up near the coastline contributed significantly to who I am, and this subconsciously built a complex relationship between water and me. through this film, i want to explore the connotations of water and its parallels with my identity. this project is an interdisciplinary work, combining art with social science and interface physics. i looked into place identity, a concept in social science and urban planning concerning the significance of places for their inhabitants, and how these meanings contribute to individuals’ self-concepts. the videos of water droplets are shot with a high-speed camera and are extracted from my scientific experiments with interface physics. i combined all of the clips i filmed and the information i gained from my research into a 3d model which could be seen throughout the film, animated with cinema 4d.

lace as a confinement - quantum dots
connecting the quantum world with the nature of human relationships -> operate on a sense of delicacy
bringing in an emotional aspect -> lace and its associations with feminity

while einstein realized that light is the quintessence of the universe, the same apotheosis of light is mirrored in the artworld: claude monet claimed that “the real subject of every painting is light.” thus, two areas of knowledge that seem diametrically different are united by their common function of perception and pursuit of truth. in this piece, i wish to combine artistic representation with scientific theory by focusing on electromagnetic induction. each of the components in the scene is interconnected: the wires, an unassuming protagonist, becomes the conduit forthe interplay of electric and magnetic fields while the light bulb absorbs this cosmic drama and transforms it into a luminous spectacle. at the nascent moment of discovery, distinctions blur between art and science as both share the aim of comprehending reality.
“we’ve become a race of peeping toms.” from ‘rear window’ to today’s digital world, we all reside in an illusory security ofthe space from which we observe the lives of others. yet, when these quotidian acts of “voyeurism” are exposed, as inthis digital installation, it raises questions about our innatedesire to look and partake in this risky behavior. having their image projected, the audience engages in a reciprocal watching relationship with the installation, prompting adiscussion about the ethics of looking and being looked at.

everything that we create is not isolated from the rest of human history. technology, like what carl sagan said in the cosmos series, is a product of the tradition of human curiosity; thus the historical context/larger ideological framework of society cannot be ignored. in a sense, it is impossible for us to create something completely without negative implications. we cannot create an objective machine since it is inherently conjured up by the human mind and shaped by the biases of the creator.
how measurement in the quantum world becomes analogous to using a “strobe light” in four dimensions.

unlike mechanization, which “fragments any process and puts the fragmented parts in a series,” automation, especially in its electronic form, generates “a total field of inclusive awareness” (McLuhan 8,9). it no longer relies on linear progression but instead “processes all parts of a complex simultaneously,” enabling instantaneous pattern recognition and predictive coherence (McLuhan 8). this logic anticipates the algorithmic structures that underlie contemporary digital systems, in which disparate data inputs are absorbed and recomposed into uniform, repeatable outputs.
